Trading Glossary
Trading successfully depends on understanding the language of the markets. The Northern Algo Trading Glossary breaks down the core concepts every small-cap momentum trader needs to know — from price action and volume behavior to psychological levels, momentum divergence, and risk management.
Markets are driven by the interaction of price, participation, and psychology. High-volume daily levels mark prices where historically active trading sessions left a structural footprint on the chart. Psychological levels represent round-number prices that traders commonly monitor for support and resistance. Momentum divergence occurs when price continues in one direction while the underlying participation or momentum weakens, often signaling potential exhaustion. Together, these concepts form the foundation of how Northern Algo indicators visualize market structure and help traders identify areas of confluence worth watching.
This glossary is designed to support your learning whether you are new to small-cap trading or refining an existing edge. Each term includes a plain-language description and, where relevant, a reference to the Northern Algo indicator that puts the concept into practice. Use it alongside our free scripts and the Northern Algo indicator suite to build a clearer picture of what the chart is telling you — and to trade with greater discipline, patience, and confidence.
Northern Algo tools are intended for informational and educational use only and should be used alongside a trader's own judgment, testing, and risk management.
High-Volume Daily Level (HVDL)
VolumeA structural price level derived from a completed daily candle that recorded the highest trading volume within a selected historical lookback. HVDLs identify prices connected to historically active trading sessions and are used as reference areas when evaluating possible support, resistance, rejection, or retests.
Confluence
Market StructureThe overlap of multiple independent structural references near the same price, such as several high-volume daily levels, a psychological level, and an extended-hours high. Areas of confluence are watched more closely because they combine several historical references into one zone.
Momentum Divergence
MomentumA condition where price continues in one direction while the underlying participation or momentum weakens or moves out of alignment. Divergence can be bullish or bearish and is often treated as a context marker for potential exhaustion rather than an automatic trade signal.
Psychological Level
Psychological LevelsA round-number or milestone price that traders commonly monitor. Psychological levels are organized by significance into macro, major, minor, and micro categories, with greater visual prominence given to the levels most likely to influence trader behavior.
Risk Management
Risk ManagementThe disciplined process of controlling position sizing, stop placement, and exposure on each trade. No indicator or strategy can guarantee profitability, so consistent risk management is essential to long-term trading survival and consistent execution.
Premarket High of Day (PMH)
Price ActionThe highest price reached during the premarket session on a given trading day. A qualifying PMH must exceed the regular-session high and meet configured move and dollar-volume requirements before it is retained as a structural reference.
